Rowing

Welcome to Rowing at the George

We are the rowing section of the Royal St. George Yacht Club in Dún Laoghaire — a growing community of men and women, beginners and experienced, recreational and competitive, who share a love of getting out on the water.

Whether you've never picked up an oar or you're looking for a new crew, there's a place for you here. We row year-round — on Dublin Bay when conditions allow, and on the rowing machines when they don't. Our culture is welcoming, development-focused, and genuinely fun.

The club was originally founded as the Dublin Rowing Club in 1838, and we're proud to have renewed that tradition with a thriving coastal rowing section that's growing every season.

We run multiple sessions each week with something for everyone — men's, women's, and mixed crews. If you're a club member who has never rowed before, you can come along and give it a try with no commitment. If you enjoy it, there are regular sessions where you'll pick up technique from more experienced rowers and develop at your own pace.

As you progress, there are more challenging sessions for those who want to push their fitness and cover longer distances on the bay. Everyone develops together through a volunteer-led coaching model — we coach each other, learn together, and there's a rhythm of activity that keeps people engaged and coming back.

We Row All Year

We row through every season. On the water when we can, on the ERGs when we can't. There's always a session to turn up to.

Indoor Rowing with Crew Class

In partnership with Crew Class, founded by Niall O'Toole — Ireland's first rowing world champion and three-time Olympian — we offer indoor rowing classes right here at the club.

Crew Class caters to all ages and fitness levels, from complete beginners to experienced athletes. Their structured programme takes you from learning the rowing stroke through to building real, measurable fitness. Classes run both indoors and outdoors throughout the week.

Whether you want to complement your on-water rowing or simply get a brilliant low-impact total-body workout, Crew Class is the perfect starting point.

The Muglins Challenge

Our flagship rowing event — a ~10km coastal race from Dún Laoghaire Harbour out around the Muglins Rock and back. Open to RSGYC members and invited neighbouring clubs, the Muglins Challenge brings together crews for a brilliant day of racing and camaraderie.

Alongside the on-water race, the day includes an indoor rowing machine event, followed by a buffet supper and drinks in the clubhouse. Competitive, social, and a great reason to be part of the club.
